THE STORY BEHIND TOP OF THE ROCK

A STORY THAT BEGINS IN 1933...

John D. Rockefeller, Jr. first opened the Observation Deck atop 30 Rockefeller Plaza more than 70 years ago, to give something back to New Yorkers and their guests from around the world- a place to appreciate and celebrate the city.

The Observation Deck's original design was inspired by the decks of the great ocean liners of the era -complete with deck chairs, gooseneck fixtures and vents inspired by a ship's stacks. A trip to the Observation Deck was like setting sail in the heart of the world's most dynamic city.

Now, for the first time in 20 years, this breathtaking vantage point is being re-introduced to the people of New York and the world.

...AND CONTINUES INTO THE 21ST CENTURY

TOP OF THE ROCK is a streamlined, uncluttered and thrilling experience - with panels of fully transparent, non-reflective safety glass allowing completely unobstructed, open-air views of the entire city. The architect Gabellini blended modern materials with the deck's original elements - like the custom ""shot-sawn" limestone and cast-aluminum fleurs-de-lis that are signatures of the original design. The result is Art Deco grace combined with state-of-the-art technology and simplicity.

History:

  • Observation deck was first opened to the public in 1933
  • Deck was originally designed to evoke the upper decks of a 1930s grand ocean liner, outfitted with deck chairs, gooseneck fixtures, and large air-conditioning vents intended to look like the stacks on a ship's deck
  • The observation deck was closed to the public in 1986

Innovative Features:

  • Multi-media exhibit on the history of Rockefeller Center featuring contemporary plasma screens alongside an original basswood model of 30 Rockefeller Plaza
  • Sky shuttle elevators have projections on the glass ceiling showing images from 1930s through present day, symbolizing the passage of time, as they transport visitors to the deck
  • Completely indoor viewing areas with floor to ceiling windows
  • Brand new, transparent safety glass panels that allow completely unobstructed open-air views and protection from the elements

Top of the Rock provides visitors with an opportunity to appreciate the architecture of Rockefeller Center and its significance to the growth of New York City. Tishman Speyer is committed to the preservation and restoration of Rockefeller Center, which is the site of numerous public exhibits and events. Each day, an estimated 250,000 people walk through the Rockefeller Plaza complex, which is home to the most famous Christmas Tree in the world
